“Seeing we have this ministry … we do not faint…” ….2 Corinthians 4:1

Which do we consider is God’s highest purpose, the ministry of gifts or the ministry of life? For the temporary edification of the churches, some may minister by miraculous gifts, but in this passage Paul points forward to that which is the most to be prized. It’s not the gifts but the life. Jesus is the life as He is the way and the truth. If we are Christian then we have the life of Christ, a life which comes into us through death. So it is not the working of gifts but the working of the Cross that is the true and real measure of a Christian’s growth and stature!

Today in the Church as Christ’s body, for the edification of young churches and the winning of souls, spiritual gifts may take on special significance for a short season, but they are never in themselves a mark of maturity and they are certainly never something of which to boast. Especially in preaching, only the foolish are proud of the words God gives, for has He not shown that He will speak, if need be, through an ass!
